7 Reasons Why You Should Become a Regular Guest Blogger

It has been a great week here in Nigeria with the sun being very hot, you can’t believe it, i nearly boiled yesterday. I don’t know if its like this in other places. Ok, enough of my ranting. I want introduce to you a new guest on TBC; Sonia Jackson. I think she has something to share with us now and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. So, lets hear what she has to say first, we’ll talk again in the comment section.

A guest blogger is not as prestigious as it sounds. It brings to mind an honored guest speaker at some sort of event. Sadly, a guest blog poster is something less glamorous. A guest blogger agrees to work for free and submit unique content to a blog, in return for a link from that blog. The downside is that you are spending time creating content for the sake of a link, which hardly seems worth it. So here are seven reasons why you should consider giving it a go.

Why you should be a Regular Blogger:

1 – Loyal readers of one blog may learn to love you

The blogs that you post to are going to have their loyal viewers. In truth, many blogs do not have loyal viewers. But they do have people who sign up to their RSS feed. The average user will check their RSS feeds occasionally and view the websites associated with it. You can gain the love and affection of these people and use it to your advantage. You may even get them to come to your website and sign up to your RSS feed.

2 – It is an easy way to get links from other domains

You can buy links, or comment on other articles, or start your own blog. But guest posting is an easy way to gain links from other domains that are stronger than your average link. If you buy a link then it will expire (so that the merchant can sell you more). If you add a comment link then it will most likely have an expiry date, and if you start your own blog it takes time and effort to have it known and ranked highly. Guest posting is a simple method that you can apply to a number of domains.

3 – It is cheaper to do it yourself than to hire people

You may be tempted to hire people to write and post to domains for you. There is nothing wrong with doing this, but it is cheaper to do it yourself. Obviously, you should not do it during your work hours; otherwise, it will probably cost you more money than it would to hire someone. But if you guest blog during your off hours, you will save a bit of money. If you guest blog during your work hours then technically you are paying via the money you will not make from actually/physically working.

4 – It beats paying for links and paying link directories

Paying for links is a very risky strategy and should be avoided for the reason that the risks are bigger than the potential gains. Nevertheless, if you are looking to buy links you should buy them from legitimate link directories, which are usually industry specific. Guest blogging is going to cost you a lot less than buying a link–even if you hire a writer to write your blog post for you. Legitimate links are often expensive; otherwise, they are often useless.

5 – You can create a series on another domain

This applies to being a regular guest blogger. If you become a regular guest blogger then it may be possible to create a series. If you create a series you will give the viewers an incentive to come back next week. You can also add lines at the end of each article where the viewer is left hanging. You can leave questions that are promised to be answered in the next installment. You may have to ask the blog owner’s permission to add a series to their blog, as they may not let you post from one week to the next.

6 – You can give them your good but not your best

If you are a regular writer or you have a staff of writers you will often have pieces that are not up to your quality standards. Those pieces will still have use up some of your resources, be they time, effort or money. You can submit your excess articles that you have no use for. Just be sure that you do not submit your sub-par articles to the better blogs. Submit them to the “dregs” (the blogs you don’t mind losing access to).

7 – Build up your brand on more than one domain

Do not assume that guest posting means that you just guest post on one blog. You can guest post on hundreds of blogs. If you have the time and the patience, you could create hundreds of backlinks and aim them all at your website. The amount of blogs you submit to is only limited by how much time you are willing to put into the endeavor.

Now its your turn. What is your own understanding of being a Guest Blogger? Have you been doing it? If yes, why and if not, why not?

The Discussion

  1. Hi Sonia,
I really enjoyed your post. I also believe in guest posting but have not being very serious with it.

But after reading your post, i think i have to start getting really serious at it.

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. Welcome Sonia to Theodore’s blog,

Well written post and something that all guest bloggers would love am sure. :)

Honestly speaking, I have yet to start with guest blogging! Yes, it might come as a surprise, but I’ve just not been able to get down to it as yet, and it surely is on my to-do list since a long time.

I agree, if you are or have a regular guest blogger, you get to know the person well enough to even be able to trust them with the content and other things. I guess even they look forward to being a part of your blog, kind of like a team.

I agree with all your points, the best being that the readers of the blog get to know and love your work with time if you are a regular on that blog, and you really don’t have to go for paying for those links as they come through naturally when you are a guest blogger.

Thanks for sharing these reasons with us. :)

BTW Theodore – we are just getting through with winter at our end, with spring right next door :)

    • Hi Harleena,
Thanks a lot for coming again. I also have not been guest posting even though i equally has it on my to-do list. I think its about time we just give it some shots who knows, it might be a great experience.

My dear, the sun here is far too much.

Thanks for coming and have a blissful weekend.

    • Yes, if you are a regular blogger you always have sites/blogs where you can submit your articles with back-links and not to pay for it. Thank you

  3. Nice post!
Instead of guest blogging I do some guest commenting, but people usually dont comment back :]
    Best regards!
Siegfried recently posted…Breezi – BUILD your own websiteMy Profile

    • Hi Siegfried,

Commenting is also a nice one. You might have to check your commenting system, i have tried leaving you some comments many times now but your blog keeps rejecting it, don’t know why. That might also be the reason why others are not commenting.

      Thanks for coming.

    • Actually, guest blogging is better than commenting. Your links live longer)

  4. Great pointers.

I think guest posting is a great way to share a message and gain readers. It requires upfront time and effort but can lead to some great connections. It also gives your readers a new viewpoint and perspective about the topic of your blog. Every Monday I feature a guest post on my blog and it has been very successful. My readers really enjoy reading and connecting with other like minded people.

    Again great post man!

  5. Hi Sonia, welcome to Theodore’s home.

I think this topic is like a lot of other ones, we don’t all see eye to eye.

I know that the sole purpose of guest posting is to put yourself in front of people who may not have ever had the opportunity of dropping by your blog or finding your content on their own. While that can be a good thing I prefer writing the majority of the “good stuff” for my blog and not someone else’s. If you write low quality content for other blogs that’s going to come back to bite you eventually. I just saw a video from Matt Cutts last week saying this very same thing.

I’ve written guest posts for others and they’ve been well received. I’ve also gotten new visitors to my blog from it so I’m not saying it’s not something you should do. I just don’t think that it’s the only way to go. I think if people worked harder to get more eyes on their own content then they wouldn’t have to spend even more time writing for others.

I have guest bloggers on my blog as well. I love to give people an opportunity to be seen and met by new faces so it’s a great method. I think that a lot of people though think it’s the “only way”. That I definitely don’t agree with.

Adrienne recently posted…Thankful Thursday – Email Marketing, Google, WP & PRMy Profile

    • Hi Adrienne,
I agree with you that guest posting is not really the only way, its just like any other method of gaining exposure, but what i agree is that guest posting if done well can be a good source of traffic and quality backlinks. I have only accepted about 3 guest posts on this blog since the inception, this is also for the same reason you gave. I like writing my own piece too.

What i have failed to do is guest post on other blogs, i think i have only written about 2 guest posts so far which is not encouraging at all. I will have to scale it up.

I’m also happy that you’ve written some.

      Thanks for coming.

    • I think that bloggers should allow to post guest articles because their site becomes more various in topics in this case.

  6. Hello Sonia,
What a great post and a well informed one. guest posting is great for bloggers but to be honest with you, i have only guest posted for a few blogs. it not because i am lazy but because i might have found some other means. but guest posting is great and i’ll start soon so i can build my authority even more. Thanks
Babanature recently posted…Optimizing Your WordPress Database For A Better PerformanceMy Profile

    • Hi Babanature,
You’re not alone on that. I planned to make guest posting a very great source of traffic for my blog but has failed woefully at that. My own case is laziness ans I’m happy to admit it.

I will also have to put more efforts into it as you said.

      Thanks for coming my man.

    • You are welcome) If you write as a guest blogger you’ll have good authority rank)

  7. Hi Sonia and Theodore,

I am a new blogger but I heard and I know that guest blogging is a great thing to do but I totally agree with Adrienne, it is better to get more eye balls to your website instead of spending the time writing for other blogs although I would do it for trusted fellow bloggers who will invite me to guest blog.

Thanks a lot for sharing this information with us Sonia and Theodore.

Theodore, I have been trying to open you blog several times in the last week to come and comment but for some reason it was giving me an error and not opening. I am glad I can make it today. Just to let you know. Thanks.

    Be Blessed,

    Neamat

    • Very sorry to hear that Neamat,
It might be though to the browser you’re using as i have also had such experiences with other blogs, i normally try loading the blog with another browser which usually works, but I’m happy you made it this time.

To be candid, you have to give guest posting a shot, I’m sure you will use it to gain more exposure for your site. I will soon invite you to guest post for me.

Thanks Neamat for coming here today.

      Be blessed too.

    • But you can work with your own blog and write for others at the same time. Just decide how much time you want to waste for writing and how much – for improving your site. You can combine blogging and guest writing.

  8. It’s one of the best way to get backlinks and link juice to your website but at some point became redundant if you focus only on manufactured links. I’d better write for myself and then get natural links.

  9. One of the biggest issues i have with guest blogging is the “being afraid” factor. Afraid of not getting read. Afraid of getting turned down. Afraid of failing. Here you have some great tips to help stop being so afraid.
    Great job

    • Welcome to my community John,
What is the one thing you will do if you weren’t afraid? I guess you’ll take action right? Now, the one thing that always stand on our way towards achieving what we want is fear.

If you wanna feel fabulous, do what you’re afraid of doing. That’s all i can say for now.

      Thanks for the visit man.

    • So don’t afraid, John=) and start guest blogging! It’s not easy but it’s possible!

  10. Hey Sonia

Great to see you at Theodore’s blog.

I’ve only done a couple of guest posts more because I don’t have time to do any more.

I like to concentrate on my own writing on my blog and haven’t accepted any guest posts there as yet.

The requests I’ve had tend to be from people who have not previously engaged with me in any way. Not a good way to approach asking me if they can guest post on my blog!

    Great information shared!

Thanks for introducing us to Sonia.

I feel guest blogging is a win-win deal. We get the chance to make a new connections which otherwise wouldn’t have been possible and also get link juice as a byproduct.Owner of the blog gets a break and also some creative ideas coming to his blog as well.I want to start that very soon.

    Thanks for sharing this Theodore.

  14. Welcome here Sonia and it’s good reading your post.
Of course , guest blogging is powerful in link building, relationship building and traffic. The more frequent you post on related and authority blogs, the more exposed you become and the higher the chances of getting more business.

Sometimes it’s difficult to decide between taking your exciting article to someone else’s blog and posting it on your own blog. ;)

Hope to read more from you

    Have a splendid weekend

    • Hey man,
I also agree with all you said here. I understand what you mean by the feelings of taking your blog post to someone else blog, but its a win win situation here. You will also benefit from it bro.

Thanks for coming and happy new month.

  15. If you can’t choose the blog to guest post you should think what is more important for you: traffic from other blog or your own readers. Of course, both these thing are important. it’s better when you guest post and improve your own site.

  16. Fantastic guest post Sonia and the point I liked the most from your list was numero 7.

Building your brand in other places (blogs) makes your business stronger, brings more exposure to new eyeballs and in my short experience with blogging, I have found true gems (people) who were guest posting at a blog I normally read and then formed a new friendship.

Guest posting is something I need to be doing but I’ll get back to it as soon as I’m done with a product I’m finishing first.

Thanks for the great read and your site surely looks fantastic, great job!

  17. Sonia, these are great reasons to guest post. However, I am like Theodore I have not been very serious with it.

I understand all the benefits. I just can not find time to post other blogs. I am pretty particular about what I publish so I assume every blogger is.

So with that said I do not have time to keep writing articles only to see them rejected.

  19. Hi Sonia, wow, I can imagine writing guest posts for 100′s of blogs. I do a few – sometimes monthly 1 or 2. I don’t know if I could do more than that with my own multiple blogs. It’s a great way to meet new bloggers and get added exposure. It’s one of many ways to accomplish that. I also have some people guest post for me. I’m more choosly lately of who and what they will post. It worked out great when I was on vacation too. Hi Theodore, great topic with Sonia guest posting here :)

Happy weekend. Just like you said, guest Blogging is really a great way to meet other bloggers and create some wonderful relationship.

Am happy you’re also doing it and I will start getting more serious at it too.

      Thanks for coming.

    • Thank you. With guest posting opportunities you can create your own network of good writers.

  20. Guest posting, ohh my number strategy to stole other blog’s readers and get email subscribers. I think guest posting isn’t enough and won’t help you grow your blog. You should first learn how to encourage the visitors coming to your blog stay around. Build a good landing page, and welcome them warmly so when you guest post on a reputable blog, you get visitors so you must be able to make them subscribe to your blog.

Nice post by the way Sonia.

I agree with that guest posting is the number strategy to steal other blogs readers. You’ve also made a very interesting point here. We have to build our blog in such a way that those new visitors we’re expecting to come will convert.

      Thanks for coming man.

  21. Sure, you shouldn’t open guest post for your site when it’s brand new. Anyway, you choose what to publish and what should be rejected. But when the article is well-written you’ll have more visitors

  22. I love it when folks get together and share views. Great blog, stick with it!

Should people commenting would like to generate backlinks then they might want to at the very least show the intelligence to post a related and insightful comment. All comment spam will do is possibly damage your SEO attempts and generates useless backlinks. The best way to be a success is to befriend fellow bloggers who have blogs of a similar subject matter and generate really targeted traffic by posting a related comment. Hopefully more people will consider that prior to replying below me, Thanks.
